How the Ethiopian Salary Tax System Works and What’s New
Ethiopia uses a progressive tax system for income tax thus the more you earn, the higher your taxes are. Your salary falls into different tax brackets, with each its own rate. For example, if you make between 4001 birr and 7000 birr a month, you will pay a 20% tax on the amount above 4000 birr. If you earn between 10001 birr and 14000 birr, that will be 30% on the amount above 10000 birr. Higher earners pay more which ensures the system hits bigger salaries harder.
- 0 – 2000 ETB: 0%
- 2001 – 4000 ETB: (Taxable Income * 15%) – 300
- 4001 – 7000 ETB: (Taxable Income * 20%) – 500
- 7001 – 10000 ETB: (Taxable Income * 25%) – 850
- 10001 – 14000 ETB: (Taxable Income * 30%) – 1350
- Over 14000 ETB: (Taxable Income * 35%) – 2050
- Net Salary (Take Home) = Total Gross Income – Pension Deduction – Income Tax
Recent Push for a Higher Tax-Free Threshold
In recent months, the Ethiopian Labor Confederation made waves by demanding salaries up to 8,384 birr per month to be tax free. Right now, the tax-exempt threshold is 2000 birr, so this would be a significant increase. Their plan is to match international poverty benchmarks and ease the burden on low earner citizens. If this passes, it could change how much tax you would have to pay.
New Taxes on Digital Creators and High Earners
The government rolled out fresh tax reforms targeting digital creators, consultants, and high earners. If you’re a non-resident earning income from Ethiopian users through platforms like TV, radio, or the internet, you now owe tax to the government here which was not implemented prior. This applies to technical service providers too, if one works in Ethiopia for over 91 days in a tax year, they have to be ruled by the laws of these taxes. These rules aim to capture income from a trending and growing online work.
Fuel and Vehicle Taxes Coming Soon
To boost government’s revenue, new taxes are being planned for fuel and vehicles. You’ll be seeing a 15% value-added tax (VAT) on fuel and a 15% excise duty. Plus, there’s talk of a vehicle circulation tax for fuel-powered cars, which will be additional on the current taxes. These changes will raise costs for drivers and businesses, part of a push to strengthen state finances.
Government budget Hike Signals More Revenue Focus
The Ethiopian cabinet just approved a 31% budget increase for the 2025/26 financial year. This is a clear sign they’re serious about collecting more revenue, including through taxes and other means. Expect these reforms to shape how your salary gets taxed in the future. Comment below on how you find the current taxing laws and how it’s affecting you.
